How to be a good leader

Back to home page click here

HOW TO BE

A GOOD LEADER

  • Remember: leadership skills and techniques can be learned. You don't have to be a natural leader. Very few people are.

  • Know your team. At some point, every day, walk around the office and say "Hi" to everyone who works for you. If you're not in the office that day, call and see how people are.

  • Meet your team. Regularly - daily, weekly or monthly, depending on your place and type of work - have meetings of all the members of the team. Keep these meetings short, focused and action-orientated.

  • Train your team. Every team member should have at least two days training a year. Newer and more senior colleagues should have more. If they don't ask to go on training sessions, suggest some suitable courses.

  • Grow your team. Through varied experience and regular training, you should be developing each team member to be more and more confident and more skilled.

  • Set objectives for each team member. As far as possible, these objective such be SMART - Specific Measurable Achievable Resourced Timed.

  • Review the performance of each team member. At least once a year - at least quarterly for the first year of a new team member - have a review session where you assess performance, give feed-back and agree future objectives and training.

  • Inspire your team. Consider making available a motivational quote or story every week or month [for lots of good quotes click here].

  • Socialise with your team. Have lunch or an after-work drink with them, especially when a staff member has a birthday or there's another reason to celebrate.

  • Thank constantly. The words "Thank you" take seconds to say, but mean so much.

  • Praise constantly. The words "Well done" take seconds to say, but will be long remembered and appreciated.

  • Communicate constantly. Don't assume that people know what you're doing, still less what you are planning or thinking. Tell them, using all the communication tools to hand: team briefings, electronic newsletters, organisational newspapers.

  • Eliminate. Too often we do things because they've always been done. Life changes. Consider whether you could stop doing certain things altogether.

  • Delegate. You don't have to do everything. Develop your team members by training them to do more and trusting them to take over some of the things you've been doing.

  • Empower. A really effective leader sets clear objectives for his team members, but leaves detailed implementation of these objectives to the discretion and judgement of individual members of the team. As Second World War U.S. General George S. Patton put it: "Don't tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results”.

  • Facilitate. A confident leader does not try to micro-manage his team, but makes it clear that, if team members need advice or assistance, he is always there to facilitate and support.

  • Be on time. Always start meetings on time and finish them on time. Natural breaks keep people fresh. Short meetings concentrate the mind.

  • Be seen. Don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. So visit each unit or department for which you are responsible on a regular basis. Don't do this unannounced - you are not out to undermine other leaders or catch out staff. So arrange with the unit leader or departmental head when you'll visit and ask him or her to walk round with you.

  • Make time. Managers are often very busy and this can deter people from approaching you, so make time for people and be approachable. People will appreciate you taking five minutes out of your busy schedule, especially if you act on/listen to what they say.

  • Really listen. Many of us - especially those who think they are important - don't really listen, but instead think about what they're going to say next. Give the person speaking to you your full attention and really take on board what they are saying. [For more detailed advice on listening click here]

  • Accept honest criticism. Criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance or a stranger - but it's a powerful tool of learning. Above all, assess criticism on merit, without regard to its originator.

  • Think strategically. The doers cut a path through the jungle; the managers are behind them sharpening the machetes; the leaders find time to think, climb the nearest tree, and shout "Wrong jungle!" Find time to climb the trees.

  • Have a mentor or buddy, someone doing similar work in the same or a similar organisation with whom you can regularly and frankly discuss your progress and your problems as a leader.

  • Have a role model, someone who can inspire you to be a truly great leader. If you can't find one, study Jed Bartlet as the American President in any episode of the television series "The West Wing".

  • Constantly revisit and review these tips. In his seminal work, "The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People", Stephen Covey puts it this way: "Sharpen the saw".

  • Plan your succession. You won't be there forever and you may not be in control of the timing and circumstances of your departure. So start now to mentor and train at least one colleague who could take over from you.

ROGER DARLINGTON

Just to share something while browsing the net. Some tips that might be useful for us that one day gonna be a leader. Tak kira leader at the office, family, siblings etc. I know it's not easy but if we think positively then we can do it :)

ini semua cooobaannn

Cobaan pertama
Monday 10 Aug
Hajat di hati balik ampang nak amik my bro's car since he left for SG to work. Then adik kecik plak pakai.Tunggu till 11.30pm. Time nak amik , mak suh hantar adik pegi hospital since he's been fever continuously for 3-4 days despite being to the clinic, with his gastric. Pegi HKL, penuh as usual, then heading to Hosp. Ampang with Hubby helps. orang still ramai eventho it shows 1.15am. i cannot take it anymore so we both decided balik dulu then hubby come again to fetch them up. i am home at 3am!!esok keje. next day mak called and mentioned that adik admitted hosp. ampang for dengue. dang! i can't be there coz i'm on event for 2 days

Cobaan kedua
Selasa, 11 Aug
I went to KLCC banquel hall for CM official launching wt boss. While listening to the Deputy Sec Gen of MInistry Tourism talking, i've text to Ghadap and said lunch today have to postponed as i'm still here at 11.05am. and he replied ok. And this time which i'm a bit unsure whether i have put back my hp in my handbag which is next to me on the left or it's on mylap. And after 7mins, the Deputy had finished launched, all i know is that i am hungry for not having breakfast so we're heading to the refreshment table, not far just 200metres on the left corner of the hall.

After realising it within 7mins, i am straight heading to the seat and guess?it was gone. i ran through the whole seats with the helped of the banquet staffs but none. Boss said my hp is still ringing but alas, it's still on silent mode not helping eh. advised that to report to Security dept, i did and they shd revert. Meantime, no tears from me. I am redha and pasrah. It's my 2nd time. i still can acted as if nothing happen. BUt i have to walked all the way to Maxis to get my new sim card.ergh. results. i have no hp while tomorrow is my big event and ppl need to call me.hopeless feeling. i need my hubby :(

Cobaan ketiga
Wed 12 Aug
As mentioned, using my bro's car, Savvy while he's away. biase je. auto. Kwn dah advised parking kat Impiana KLCC kecik, for those tak biase be careful. By knowing me yang jarang bwk kete and usually drives in a normal road yg besar & straight je i find it nervous. And yet it's happening. nak naik ramp, kete belah kiri terciumla dgn tiang tu..skreeetttt. mak aih. rase nak nangis. i am indeed bile dah parked. my first time. of coz i mind.kete adik aku. baru 7 bln tuh.mampus! called hubby for an inspired words and courage.after dah istighfar baru boleh cool down sket.bende nak jadi. nak buat camne.kete tu adelah kene ketuk sket and to re-paint/spray.

then only i can do my work with peace without thinking much about what have happened. life has to move on. so esok leh keje with peace.bende nak jadi kan

Conclusion
herm, camnelah smuanye boleh terjadi. Dugaan sempena nak berpuasa, said my hubby. Maybe Yes and not. To test tahap kesabaran. Mood tgh swing coz nak period, all these is not helping me at all. nasib ade husband tercinta. pengubat luka.huhu

i have bought new hp, will posted it later. kinda cool :)

Sayonara Abang

left : abang, kakak, adik

Sedih. Mmg sgt sedih..that's why la aku purposed-ly tanak jumpe adik aku once he leave for Singapore. Coz i'll be crying. Moreover, with my mom yang cengeng gak..oh tidak. takleh jadi

As expected mak aku called this morning sambil nangis saying adik aku dah leave for Singapore. Dia nak keje sana. Nak cari duit lebih katenya. Bagusla tu jgn lupa family and asal usul plak. In fact i am proudly to be Malaysian, even tho bapak ku Singaporean. Aku taknak adikku kesana and turn to be a kiasu Malay Spore yg lupa daratan & berlagak.

Herm, makin sunyilah rumah mak kat ampang. Tinggal adik & mak je. nasib makcik ada kat sebelah sebg jiran. Boleh tolong tgk2 kan diorang. I'm stil ulang-alik ampang & keramat, tak jauh mana pun kan. In fact was planning to celebrate raya this year kat Ampang. perfect.

Anyway to abang (panggilan for my 1st brother ni- kitorang just ber-3, 2 males and me)
have fun working there. Ingat family and commitment to the family. Jgn nak enjoy je. Jgn lupa asal usul. Jaga diri and kerja rajin2. Moga sihat selalu and murah rezeki

sms dr abg : "Kak, tengok kan mak untuk aku"

sedih je kan baca his sms. mmg aku nangis, kat ofis ni. coz this is his first time being away from the family

Kawan sebagai office mate

Subject :
aged 28yrs, single but not available, kerja satu opis ngn saya, gaji tak cecah RM2k pun, saya dah kenal for almost 7-8 yrs, seorang yg emoish mcm pompuan..haha. tak stable lagi la ni

Problem:
has working experiences like almost 3 yrs in different company. there's one which only lasting for 3months due to he can't stand of working shift (takde pun shift malam mcm keje hotel.celcom..haha) maybe just being mengada tak dapat spend more time with gf more kot.haha
now working wit my company. and have to do additional jobs (slightly je..keje reception) and tak sampai sehari buat xtra job dah mula tanye pasal extra allowance.

Then sudah berani sort of arguing dgn boss over a project that his handling. masuk bilik boss which currently boss is with a client, just to asked whether he can go off now for friday prayer, eventho his colleague is not back from lunch yet (have to take turn due to takde org nak jaga telefon)

on a few occasion that he'd rather asked the boss directly rather than to me (as the secretary) on certain issues which is silly and funny. results, aku yang meng-introducekan keje ni kat dia jadi malu and speechless over his childish attitude at work. tak sangka camni rupanya cara dia bekerja

Question :
Should i as his friend and a office mate to advise him on what is the do's and don'ts in the office/on how to deal with your boss?
Should i brief him on the office/admin etiquette?
After all of above, will he be offended and getting emoish mcm pompuan yg seperti dia selalu buat tu?

Apa kata anda?

Oh NO

once you are married, a one million ringgit Q will be asked "bila nak dapat anak"?, "how's married life" bla bla

changes once you are a husband and a wife to your partner will not be the same. dari kecil ke besar ada je?

something that i thought will not reflect on me at this moment after almost 5 mths becoming amir's wife. i've noticed that i am no longer fit with "S" pants currently for my work pants la. it same goes with my MNG jeans where i used to fit with 32Euro size but it's not now. major problem..my hips are getting firmer a proper words than using bigger, scary!! and i have this one Zara pants that i've been using for almost 4-5 yrs which all fine until now.sad i have to let it go :(

People been telling me that i'm gaining weight a bit at certain areas such as my hips & butt definitely which i dont really care but i am now.itsk. this is the price i have to bear once you are happier with your married life.hehe. but i doubt on one thing, when is my breast getting firmer than usual?ermm...lets wait till i get pregnant huh..amin :)
